Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional Freedom Technique:

Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT for short was developed in 1995 by Gary Craig. It is also known as “tapping”. EFT focuses on tapping acupressure points on the face and body in sequence while naming the difficulty and feelings associated with that. Part of the process looks at the root cause of these feelings. The intensity of each individual feeling is scored by giving it a number. Each feeling is worked on individually. You tap yourself with your fingers relatively gently with the therapist demonstrating what to do, while being mindful of your breathing.  The overall aim is to reduce the intensity of the emotion, with the number assigned to it lowering.

Once the steps have been learnt these can be done by yourself outside of the therapy room. Using this technique in between sessions can be useful as you do not have to wait until a further session to try it again and you can work out yourself, in which situations you may find it helpful. The situation or difficulty may not be able to change especially if it is a past event, but your view and reaction to this can.

Research has been done which shows it is effective for anxiety, depression, phobias and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Please see link to read the full study.
